Want a lesson on helping authors and creating traffic for their blogs/websites?

Okay, so there is a discovery algorithm called “stumbleupon,” and it is the biggest discovery algorithm on the planet.

So, what’s it do?

Well, you download the toolbar and sign up for an account. Then, you select your favorite topics. (Science, humor, books, etc). The toolbar will have a thumbs up and thumbs down icon. You just hit “stumble” and it will take you to a new website tailored to your chosen topics. If it takes you somewhere cool, you give it a thumbs up, if it takes you to something you’d not like to see again, give it a thumbs down.

It looks like this when the toolbar is added. (It will look a little different on Firefox)

How does this help bloggers, authors, and readers?

Well, any time you “Like” a website that hasn’t been indexed on Stumbleupon yet, a new window will pop up.

This let’s you know that the page hasn’t been added yet.

All you need to do is, add a few relevant tags, select if it’s safe for work or not, and hit submit. You’re done! You just sent a ton of traffic to someone’s blog. (Feel free to do it for your own as well!)

Obviously, the more people with the Stumbleupon toolbar that like it, the more it shows up to Stumbleupon users when they share one of those interests. (In the case of the picture above, if someone were into writing, book, or blogs, they might come across the page we entered in their travels.)

Another thing you should know, the algorithm is very good at figuring out what you like, so don’t hold me responsible if you get lost down a rabbit hole of new websites. I’ve been there. 😉
